With the Trump administration's busy year, it's often difficult to keep up with the policy actions they are planning to take, are taking, and have taken. This is especially present in Trump's agenda against China, which has involved numerous social and economic policies with the goal of undermining the east Asian nation. The latest of these policies is an advancement in science and tech. Earlier this month, the White House announced a new plan to "Win the 6G race", with new presidential tech plans being centered around wireless communications.
What is 6G?
6G stands for sixth generation, and it is the upgrade to wireless communication, set to be released into the mainstream in 2026. 6G makes substantial upgrades from its predecessor 5G. It is set to have much lower latency, while being able to access far more frequencies, with some 6G tech said to support communications with one millisecond latency. If this technology is implemented the correct way, it could potentially be 1000 times faster than the average 5G network, and create a better tech experience for American consumers.
Trump’s 6G Plan
The United States is not the only nation wishing to move towards 6G. In fact, China likely already has a 6G headstart. In 2024, China set various 6G based goals, with the backing of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Their goals were reached in March, meaning 6G development is likely on the rise. An early report from China saw “cultivating future industries” as a number one domestic policy priority for the nation. If China was able to successfully cultivate 6G with little response from the US, then they’d likely be winning the international tech war. That’s where Trump’s plan supposedly comes in. Earlier this week, President Trump signed a memorandum that requested federal agencies to clear the 7.125 to 7.4 gigahertz band for commercial 6G. This would allow 6G to become far more available across the nation. Whether it’s under the leadership of President Trump or Xi Jinping, expect 6G to become a common international commodity in 2026.
