On October 8, Israel and Hamas united to establish a ceasefire agreement within the Gaza Strip territory of Palestine. The agreement was praised for its potential to mitigate enduring violence within the region, a lingering hope given that the conflict has claimed the lives of over 70,000 innocent civilians. Sadly, reality has not held to the vision of peace that the ceasefire agreement seeks to breathe into Israeli and Palestinian civilians.
Historically, Israel has had a poor track record in holding ceasefire deals: they violated a January ceasefire agreement over 900 times in three months; they violated a May ceasefire with Iran; and they violated the 2008 truce with Hamas. As such, even before the ceasefire was actively violated, it was easy to envision a reality where it would be violated, given Israel’s historic tendencies.
Unfortunately, the ceasefire violation wasn’t just a concern based on past trends, but rather something that almost immediately manifested and continues to worsen day by day. The ceasefire was initially violated when Israel launched waves of strikes in the Gaza Strip after accusing Hamas of assassinating Israeli troops in the Rafah area, resulting in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers. After initiating the violent strikes, Israeli forces argued that they were willing to reinstate the already delegitimized agreement. This wasn’t the only instance of violence, however, because things have continued into the present and ramped up in intensity. On the first of November, Al Jazeera found that Israel is continuing to violate its agreement by denying Palestinians their portion of the agreement: access to aid deliveries. Additionally, on October 29, Israeli strikes on Palestinian territory claimed the lives of one hundred and four.
In Israel, as sad as the reality is, ceasefire agreements seem to lead to very little to no movement away from violence, demonstrated by their historical actions, and now by their continued actions and denial of the necessities of life for Palestinian civilians. Hopefully, peace will soon be reached.
