The Trump administration intensified its national crackdown on sanctuary cities this week by suing Boston and Mayor Michelle Wu over the Trust Act—a 2014 law limiting local collaboration with federal immigration enforcement. Boston, home to roughly 650,000 residents, is one of more than 200 U.S. sanctuary jurisdictions encompassing nearly 60 million people nationwide. The DOJ lawsuit accuses Boston of “intentional obstruction” of federal law, alleging police released “dozens of violent or repeat offenders” instead of honoring ICE detainer requests.
ICE statistics reveal Boston’s local field office issued approximately 1500 immigration detainers in a month alone, mainly related to offenses such as assault and drug trafficking. Despite these figures, the city has reported less overall crime, such as shootings, challenging the DOJ’s claims that sanctuary harm public safety.
The Trust Act bars Boston police from detaining individuals solely on ICE warrants or sharing release information with federal agents, fostering immigrant community trust and encouraging crime reporting. Boston’s City Council reaffirmed the ordinance last December with an overwhelming 12-1 vote. Mayor Wu defended sanctuary policies as key to public safety and constitutional local governance, calling Boston “the safest major city in the country” while condemning the lawsuit as a politically motivated “authoritarian attack."
Nationally, private detention firms hold 90% of ICE detainees, many in states with sanctuary laws, which has created a complex web between local policies, federal enforcement, and prison privatization. The Boston legal battle follows similar suits against Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago, intensifying a key federalism dispute. Experts say the case will significantly influence whether and how federal authorities can compel city cooperation on civil immigration enforcement, a debate central to immigration policy’s future in America.

Question: What impact will the Trump Administration’s crackdown on sanctuary cities have?
AGD: This is a topic that’s probably easier to find stories about; something like a narrative would work well here.
Background: First defining things like sanctuary cities will be important, especially with a lay judge. Then the rest of the questions' setup probably relies on explaining what the Trump Administration’s crackdown looks like.
Answer: Doubles down on there influence and controversial practices that come with it
Increasing immigration enforcement
Catalyzing legal challenges
Driving social unrest
Analysis: I think the analysis here is fairly straightforward. For point 1, I would explain how Trump has wanted to increase immigration enforcement but how sanctuary cities have made that more difficult. For point 2, I would discuss the legal battles that are surrounding his actions in the different levels of courts. For point 3, I would talk about the erosion of community trust and controversy resulting from Trump’s actions.
